On one of our days to Finland, we decided to travel to Porvoo to see the Tove and the Archipelago exhibtion at the Art Factory. It was about an hour away on the bus from Kamppi bus station in Helsinki, then about a ten minute walk to get to the exhibition. It was a gorgeous day and Porvoo is one of Finland’s second oldest towns, so we had a bit of an explore and took some pictures.
The images below of Tove Jansson, Tuulikki Pietilä and Klovharu are mainly taken from a computer screen that was tucked away in a corner at the exhibition, but they were so fascinating and I don’t think I’d seen any of them before, so I’m sorry for the bad quality images but I couldn’t not take pictures as they’re so rare!
We stopped at the cafe on the left above for drinks, I didn’t realise we were actually on a boat until Tomm told me! Continue reading
This afternoon we visited the Arabia Moomin mug exhibition. It’s just a 20 minute bus journey from central Helsinki and it’s free entry. It displayed the full mug collection as well as test products, sketches, plans and showed the process of how they are made.
It’s really rare that Artbox* offer discount any other time than November 1st each year, but they promised they would give us a voucher code for 15% off for 24 hours if they surpassed 4500 Facebook likes. Today is the day! I’ve already treated myself to a Moomin mug haul because I couldn’t resist the big discount and it’s also my 21st Birthday on Saturday so it’s a nice little treat to myself~
I’m really excited for them to arrive! They should be here within 24-48 hours as they weigh over 2kg so Artbox send them out with a courier. I was planning on getting them in Finland this summer but they work out the same price with the voucher and now I don’t have to worry about them breaking in my suitcase :)
It makes me so happy that Artbox* are now stocking the new 2014 Jubilee mug! This mug is very limited edition and celebrates Tove Jansson’s centenary. It is taken from The Dangerous Journey book where a girl called Susanna loses her glasses. There are glasses to be found in every 6th mug which makes them even more special and collectable! €2 for every sale goes towards the charity Unicef.
I didn’t expect this mug to be stocked anywhere in the UK anytime soon so I ordered mine on eBay from Finland and it cost me about £65 for one with glasses. But at least I’ve got it! I expect the prices to soar for these mugs and they may even be worth a few hundred pounds in the near future ;)
Moomin are also having a giveaway of this mug over on their new website!
Just a quick update showing you the new Arabia collections coming April 2014. These are the designs that are replacing the old mugs from 1999.
A few weeks ago Tomm surprised me by saying we were going to Bath to see the Horse & Bamboo production of Moominland Midwinter! I’d been planning to go since summer but now that I work weekends and I’m in college during the week I pretty much gave up hope, then when he told me he’d planned it I was so excited! On Boxing Day we set off for the 230 mile trip, stopping at various service stations for well-deserved Starbucks and rest breaks. As I don’t drive, I usually read on my Kindle so I was very happy~
We booked tickets for the Friday night performance of Moominland Midwinter as all the other days had sold out. I already knew it would be fantastic, but that instilled more excitement in me and I’m glad so many people are interested in it. I first heard about the performance on Twitter as someone posted a picture of the puppets being made. Obviously I was out of my mind with excitement. They were actually made in Lancashire (very close to me) where horse & bamboo are based.
I was surprised at how accurate the performance was in regards to the book. It was clear that a lot of time and effort was put into creating each character, even the squirrel who doesn’t play a very big part. As for the set, I was completely taken aback by how many varieties they had. I always like to see new backgrounds in plays but there are only usually 1 or 2 in an average play. But this wasn’t average at all! Ski slopes opened up to become Tooticky’s hut and even a trap door was used to go fishing. It was quite melancholic but had lots of uplifting scenes, like Little My wearing Moominmamma’s tea cosy and using a silver tray as a sled. All the characters had personalities perfect to the book and I like the strong emphasis placed on the moral of the story – overcoming your fears and being happy in any situation.
Moominland Midwinter runs until January 12th 2014 so if you would like to buy tickets, please do so as soon as possible to avoid disappointment!
“Maybe my passion is nothing special, but at least it’s mine.” – Tove Jansson, Travelling Light
This quote sums up my entire life. I’ve never had doubts about being so enthusiastic when it comes to the Moomins. Not even when people comment things like ‘aren’t they for children?’ or ‘why did you pay so much money for that?’, it actually makes me sad that they can’t understand what it’s like to have true passion for something. It seems my love for them is really making an impact on other people too. Already I’ve been featured in a UK magazine and BuzzFeed have also featured me in their page on ‘50 Lessons That Moomins Can Teach You About Life‘ with a picture taken from my blog (#5) and an actual picture of me and some of my collection (#44). Also, the newspaper Helsingin Sanomat released their special Teema issue which is all about Tove Jansson – and I’m mentioned in it!
I started off just posting pictures on Tumblr, making a few gifs from the 90s anime series and then uploading pictures of my (somewhat smaller) collection. Starting my blog is the best decision I’ve ever made. I’ve met so many likeminded people through this and I was even invited to the Moomin HQ in Helsinki, which is probably the most significant aspect of my entire life.
I couldn’t do it without the support of my readers, so as a thank you I am hosting a giveaway where you can win a copy of the new 2013 edition of Sculptor’s Daughter. Whether you’re already a fan of Tove’s adult novels or just enjoy the Moomins, this is a great book to introduce you to her adult fiction. Guaranteed if you like the Moomins, you will love this! You definitely get the same feeling whilst reading it as you do from the Moomin novels, and it’s actually the closest thing Tove has released where she has openly told us that it’s her autobiography.
This edition of Sculptor’s Daughter was released on November 7th 2013 and is in English. The giveaway ends at midnight of November 27th. It is open internationally :)
It’s been a really good few weeks for Moomin merchandise lately, and I’m so pleased with the new products that are available. Firstly, Topshop released two new pairs of underwear and a new set of pyjamas in less than a week. They usually only bring out a new pair of underwear every month or two! The pyjamas are very oversized and perfect to snuggle into, with the softest material they’ve ever used. Previously, the grey t-shirts were 92% cotton, 8% polyester, whereas the new white t-shirts are 60% cotton and 40% polyester.
It’s that wonderful time of year again when Artbox offer 20% off all their products in celebration of Hello Kitty’s Birthday with the voucher code ‘birthday‘ at the checkout! Every year for the past three years I’ve taken advantage of this amazing deal, as they are the cheapest retailers of Moomin merchandise, so even more of a discount is always appreciated. This offer is only valid until the end of November 1st 2013, please don’t miss out! So, what have I bought?! Well, most of my order consists of Christmas presents for my friend Nina in Finland, but I got myself a couple of things that I can share here without ruining the surprise:
